Take Harvey Weinstein's Lead: If You're Newly Diabetic or Just a Sugar Addict, Take Action!

Getting type 2 diabetes might actually be cause for celebration.

OK, maybe I'm exaggerating, but movie producer Harvey Weinstein -- whose known for such wonderful films as "Chicago," "Shall We Dance," "Life is Beautiful," and "The English Patient" -- apparently had exactly the attitude you need to face and deal with diabetes.

You see, in 2004, Weinstein -- who used to overdose M&Ms quite regularly, along with skipping breakfast and maybe even lunch -- was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

But he toook the news in stride and launched upon some massive lifestyle changes.

Recently, Weinstein talked about the benefits of making drastic diet changes and exercising more. In fact, he told a reporter that "the weight has just fallen off" to the tune of 80-plus pounds since he started taking better care of himself and is keeping "a close eye" on what he eats.

Congrats, Harvey Weinstein. I hope that your story encourages and inspires others newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes to take charge just as you have done.

By the way, I talk more about Harvey Weinstein and his sugar story in my upcoming book, SUGAR SHOCK! (Berkley, Jan. 2007). (In fact, I'm actually posting this now, because I just had to fact check something in the chapter where I talk about him.)

“Oh, my goodness, you're describing my sister! I bet all the sugar she eats often makes her act quite unlike her sweet self. Maybe she simply needs to stay away from sweeteners! I've been telling her for years that sugar disrupts her emotional balance and makes her look unhealthy. SUGAR SHOCK! is amazing!”

It's Official. SUGAR SHOCK! To Be Published Soon - Foreword by Dr. Nicholas Perricone; Medical Consultant is Dr. Stephen Sinatra; Endorsements from Dr. Christiane Northrup, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Joshua Rosenthal, Dr. Jonny Bowden, Gov. Mike Huckabee & More

Tadum! It's finally official. I'm pleased to announce that my book SUGAR SHOCK! will be released by Berkley Books in January 2007.

SUGAR SHOCK!

I'm incredibly thrilled that a number of amazing people and pioneers have joined forces with me to get the word out about the dangers of over consuming sugar and refined carbs.

Art_perriconeprescription_200

For instance, SUGAR SHOCK! will have a foreword by the renowned Nicholas Perricone, M.D., best-selling author of many books, including The Perricone Promise.

Sinatra_stephenjpg_1

In addition, the acclaimed cardiologist and anti-aging specialist Stephen Sinatra, M.D. -- author of numerous books himself -- has come on board as medical consultant.

Actually, it was a literary match made in heaven, so to speak, to find Stephen, because not only is he personable and respected by his medical peers, but he's been warning his patients for 20 years about the dangers of sugar and refined carbs. So I was greatly honored that he decided to join forces with me to educate and motivate people.

In fact, when SUGAR SHOCK! comes out, Stephen and I will appear together to give interviews to the press. You'll see us, I hope, on all kinds of news shows.

Meanwhile, much to my delight, a number of recognized medical experts already have provided endorsements.

For instance, it's a thrill it is to have the much-acclaimed physicians and best-selling authors Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, etc.) and Mehmet Oz, M.D. (YOU: The Owner's Manual) say nice things about the book.

(I'm telling you -- first one, then the other -- made my day (week) when their comments came in!)

Meanwhile, the once-overweight Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas also endorsed my book. If you're not familiar with his story, it's quite an inpirational one. He peeled off pounds by kicking sugar, eating more healthily and exercising .

Now, he's playing an influential, leading role in getting people to realize that they need to change their sugary, sedentary ways. Not only does he now hellp bring about important new legislation that promotes a healthy liftestyle, but he's written a book advocating that you Quit Digging Your Grave With a Knife and Fork.

Art_bowden_jpic14

I'm also so grateful to two other people, who said quite wonderful things about SUGAR SHOCK!

Firstly, I cannot rave enough about one of my favorite, go-to nutritionists Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S. -- who has been graciously fielding my many, many requests from me over the years while I was working on this book.

It was truly exciting: Jonny kindly delivered a Wow! of an endorsement, too.

Art_joshua_iin_images_1 And I also found it especially gratifying that Joshua Rosenthal, founder of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition -- where I recently graduated as a holistic health counselor -- praised SUGAR SHOCK! as well.

Joshua is a man to watch. He is at the forefront a cutting-edge movement to educate people about healthy eating and healthy living. These students, in turn, will play an important role to educate the public. Anyhow, the fact that he said nice things about my book really touched me.

So, briefly, let me tell you how my book came about. The path from conception to publication has been a long one. SUGAR SHOCK! had its origins in spring 1998, when I kicked sugar on dotor's orders and was amazed to find that all 44 of my ailments vanished, including brain fog, crippling fatigue, mood swings, and heart palpitations.

Back then, while quitting sweets, I began researching the subject with a fervor. In fact, I became quite captivated with the subject. Anyhow, as I watched myself become transformed from a "Sugar Shrew" to "sugarfree sweetie" just by removing those offending "culprit carbs," I just had to know more. Hence, in August 2001, I began this book in earnest.

To be honest, researching and writing this book has been a challenging, at times frustrating, painstaking process. Of course, this is why I'm so incredibly jubilant that a little more than 5 years after I started it, my book will finally see the light of day!

And, to be frank, it's my greatest hope that this book will help millions.

Briefly, SUGAR SHOCK! is an expose about how over consuming sweets and processed carbs can lead to a whole host of problems, including heart disease, early aging, hypoglycemia, severe PMS, low libido, cancer, mood swings, depression, brain fog, and, of course, obesity. Ultimately, the book leaves you with hope for the future, and I provide all kinds of tried-and-true tips and tactics to help you break free of your sugar habit.

This book wouldn't have been possible were it not for the cooperation of hundreds of people around the world.

In all, I interviewed more than 300 medical experts, researchers, scientists, public health advocates, Wall Street analysts, attorneys and self-described "sugar addicts," who took time to explain and share their insights, findings, and conclusions. Then, I and a number of research assistants poured over one medical study after another to dig up the latest research that backed my theories. Ultimately, I was astounded at how much validation we uncovered. Of course, you'll hear more later, but I thought I'd whet your appetite a little first!

Stay tuned for announcements of more exciting endorsements from well-known people for SUGAR SHOCK!

"The Skinny on Fats" -- Focus on Andrea Beaman

Fabulous fats are certainly on my mind these days. I just want to do my part to let people know that we need wonderful, healthy fats for our bodies despite what you may have heard to the contrary and despite the fact that people often buy these low-fat, often-sugar-filled products.

Anyhow, yesterday I told you about Jonny Bowden's interesting piece about fats.

Today, quite coincidentally, I ran into another aticle about fats, this one called "The Skinny on Fats," which is from the dynamic holistic health counselor, natural nutritionist and chef Andrea Beaman.

You heard me talk about her recently, because Andrea -- a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (where I just graduated) -- delivered a dazzling talk on our recent graduation day.

My new friend Andrea has the kind of energy and enthusiasm that everyone should have -- and you, too, could have, if you, eat healthily, as she does. See her effervescence emanate in this video from Bravo's "Top Chef," where she was a finalist.

You'll hear more about Andrea on Monday, because this weekend, I'm doing something completely off the wall. I'll be spending Friday day, all day Saturday and until noon Sunday with about 23 other people at the Appalachian Mountain Club's house on Fire Island. While there, we will get to eat delcious, healthy, wholesome food prepared by Andrea.

I'm totally psyched and excited -- I get to spend a weekend of play, no work on my book (yeah!), great food, lots of bicycling, sailing, etc.

Shame on the U.S. Government for Dismal Diabetes Funding: Call to Congress June 7 to 9

Diabetes advocacy groups are understandably horribly upset and furious that the U.S. government is slashing funds to help fight diabetes in this country just as the number of diabetics has been increasing.

In order to attract the public's, media's and legislators' attention to this worthwhile cause, the American Diabetes Association is hosting a "Call to Congress" event June 7 to 9, when hundreds of diabetes advocates will descend on Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress to ask the government to increase funding for diabetes research and prevention and to take a greater role in treatment and prevention.

In addition, a grassroots rally or "Call to Congress" day will be held at the US Capitol June 8, beginning at 10 am.

Members of Children with Diabetes will be there, and a huge Quilt for Life that features the handiwork and experiences of diabetic children will be on display at the National Mall.

Quilt for Life: DC 2006

The events in D.C. are intended to point out the fact that diabetes has risen by over 14 percent in the last two years so that 20.8 million Americans have diabetes (or 7 percent of the U.S. population). That's up from 18.2 million people in 2003. So this is certainly not the time to cut diabetes funding.

Despite the news that diabetes is on the rise, in its 2006 appropriations bill last year, Congress cut funding to the NIH's National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) by $9 million. It also slashed money to the.CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation by $300,000 -- the first time this division's funding was cut. (Does this make sense to you? Sure amazes me!)

Now, the proposed budget for 2007 calls for another cut for the second year in a year -- an $11 million cut to the NIDDK.

Special thanks to the Diabetes Blog and the Diabetes Education and Research Center for helpful background information.

Actress Not Sweet On Sweets For Kids

Hurrah for actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, who shuns candy in her household.

"I don't give them kid food," the actress tells Life magazine, according to the Associated Press story picked up in Chicago Tribune and Canada's NationalPost.com.

"No candy. Almost no juice. When my kids have juice, it's like they're having their first taste of champagne," says Zeta-Jones, who with her husband Michael Douglas, has two kids, Dylan, 5, and Carys, 2 1/2.

Zeta-Jones -- who won an Oscar for her role in 2002's "Chicago," -- stars in "The Legend of Zorro," with Antonio Banderas, which opened Friday.

Let's hope other celebrities follow the example set by Zeta-Jones.

Mega Marketing Madness in British Columbia

BRITISH COLUMBIA--Since Tuesday, I've been hanging out, getting marketing ideas and tips galore, at a Small Seminars event here in gloriously beautiful British Columbia for a first-time, one-of-a-kind marketing conference.

The best way to sum up my three days here is: "Wow!" This is truly an opportunity of a lifetime.

What's so amazing is that our small group has had amazing access to some of the best marketing minds around. Some of the people who've been speaking here include:

  • Mega marketer Mark Victor Hansen (Our small group of about 15 heard a remarkable all-day presentation with him on Wednesday. In fact, a couple of hours ago, I had breakfast with Mark, the co-creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul and co-author of The One Minute Millionaire. You'll hear later about these amazing ideas he gave me to get the word out about my Stop SUGAR SHOCK! work.)
  • Alex Mandossian. (He's deemed "one of the top ten freelance direct marketers in America today" and he delivered an inspirational program on Tuesday. Yikes, on Tuesday, he put me on the spot to urge me to get off my butt and offer this long-awaited program, which you'll hear about shortly.)
  • "Customer Catcher" Martin Wales (He just gave a jam-packed presentation with all kinds of awesome ideas.)
  • "Powerful Promoter" Matt Bacak. (Matt's the guy who can build your mailing list by leaps and bounds. I attended an eye-opening conference with him last summer in Atlanta.)
  • "Mr. Pro-Active" Randy Gilbert (Randy can help you get your book to hit the Amazon bestseller lists.)
  • "Marketing Results Coach" Warren Whitlock (He's currently teaching us all about blogging and sending out press releases---both of which I already know how to do, which is why I'm writing to you now.)
  • Seasoned PR guy Allan Thain talks soon, too.

By the way, major kudos to Michael and Elly Ruge for hosting this fabulous event!

Anyhow, my research assistant let me know that while I've been networking like crazy, apparently a few miles away, some fascinating studies were presented at the the 2005 Annual Scientific Meeting of NAASO, The Obesity Society. More later about these studies.

Americans Can Learn From The British, Who Are Booting Junk Food Out of Their Schools

Hats off to the British! As a junk-food-fighting American, I'm blown away by this phenomenal story that's coming out of Great Britain.

Our brethen overseas have given us Americans a powerful model to emulate that involves pairing the potency of a hip, young, chef/TV celebrity with an outpouring of public support from the citizens to literally embarass the government into providing an infusion of funds to upgrade the foods served in the schools.

Now, Great Britain is gearing up for a massive nutrition overhaul in the schools, made possible by a governmental allocation of £280m over the next three years, with some £220m going to improving ingredients and targeting areas with the poorest services.

That means low-quality cookies, chips, cheap burgers and bangers, chocolate, fizzy drinks and other junk food will get the boot from the schools, as the Associated Press and Times of London report.

Indeed, earlier this week, the British government announced plans "to ban school cafeterias from serving poor-quality hamburgers and hot dogs, and to outlaw vending machines selling soft drinks, chocolate bars and potato chips to students."

According to media reports from the BBC News and others, the campaign to serve better food in the schools was pioneered by industrious, dedicated 20-something British sensation Jamie Oliver, “The Naked Chef” on the Food Network.

For those of us who are in the dark, the Food Network tells us on its website, "Sorry to disappoint you -- it's not the chef that's naked, it's the food!"

Art_the_naked_chef

Evidently, Oliver -- described by the Food Network as "streetwise and passionate about food"-- was dismayed by the poor quality of food served in British schools. So he got to work cooking up a scheme to pressure the British government.

First, he concocted a cutting-edge TV series, "Feed Me Better: starting a revolution in your school dining hall -- Jamie's School Dinners,"

Then, he blended in and scrambled a whopping 271,677 signatures of support, which he then elegantly served to Prime Minister Tony Blair.(Send him an e-mail to show your support for this exciting program!)

Presto! His TV creation, combined with the John and Jane Does of thousands, lit a fire under governmental authorities.

All of a sudden, British school officials started popping up all over the news, trumpeting their fabulous new foods-in-the-schools program. .

I love it!

Earlier this week, Education Secretary Ruth Kelly told the annual conference of the governing Labour Party that "the scandal of junk food served every day" in British schoosl must end.

Kelly crowed to the BBC News that the new cash would "transform what is offered to children and teenagers in our schools so that high-quality healthy food is on every child's plate".

But the best sound bite -- darn, wish I could see a video of this -- came from Suzi Leather, chair of the School Meals Review Board, a group that was set up by the government to oversee the improvement of school meals.

"No child should be bamboozled into eating a diet which harms them," she said.

As I sit over here in America lamenting the fate of our nation's school children, I appeal to the following:

  • Jamie Oliver, would you please help us Americans cook up such a dazzling, attention-getting nation-wide scheme to get good food in our schools, too?
  • Yoo hoo, you hot American celebrities, which one or two or more of you will step forward and lead the way so that we can force our American government into action, as Oliver did?

Gwyneth Paltrow Rightly Snubs Nose at Cup-a-Soup

First The New York Daily News, and then Slashfood, unfairly blasted Gwyneth Paltrow for reportedly showing disgust and sneering, "Who eats this stuff?" when spotting a box of Lipton's Cup-a-Soup on the set of "Dealbreakers," a short film she just finished directing.

This is entertainment news? Talk about a ridiculous, uncalled-for non-story! Simply stupid gossip.

Wait, there's more.

Lloyd Grove of the Daily News dished more unnecessary dirt and jumped to an outrageous conclusion, "...it sounds like she can't resist trying to control the food intake of perfect strangers."

Oh, give me a break.

The columnist then writes that when a production staffer admitted that his kids love the processed, additives-filled soup, Paltrow -- who follows a macrobiotic diet -- reportedly retorted, "I would rather die than let my kid eat Cup-a-Soup."

Can't say I blame Gwyneth for trying to set the guy straight.

Interestingly, while we read these quotes from the actress, we never learn the source of these alleged comments. So we're talking silly hearsay.

But let's just say that the media account was true. Let's assume that the Academy Award-winning actress wasn't exactly empathetic to the junk-food-reliant folks around her, but to say the actress that gets "irrationally dramatic around convenience foods," as Slashfood put it, is simply overstating it.

The remark also reveals a supreme ignorance on the part of the reporter.

OK, now let's take a look at the object of Paltrow's aversion:

One envelope of the Asian Beef Noodle flavor Cup-a-Soup has 70 calories, 1 gram of fat, 680 grams of sodium, 14 grams of carbs, 0 grams of dietary fiber, 1 gram of sugars and 2 grams of protein.

The list of ingredients gets even more scary. Among others, it contains maltodextrin, modified corn starch, enriched egg noodles, sugar, monosodium glutamate and yeast extract.

Can you blame Paltrow for her "eeww, not-for-my-child" reaction?

So we're talking about a processed, sodium-packed, simple carb soup, complete with all sorts of chemicals, including the much-maligned and feared MSG. Can you really call this food?

Wait, if you meander around the the Cup-a-Soup website -- which invites readers' comments -- you'll see that it basically tells you that this processed, MSG-containing food is the perfect antidote to the 3 p.m. slump.

Here's the website's sales copy:

"Beating the 3PM Slump never tasted so good! From exotic Spicy Thai Chicken to classic tomato with Croutons,Lipton® Cup-a-Soup® has 7 great varieties designed to help you bump the 3PM Slump and help you sail through your busy afternoon. Which will be your favorite? Try them all!"

Art_cupasoup_flav_asianbeef_right

Experts, I'm sure, would argue that the company has no right to call the website "A step-by-step guide to diagnosing, treating and preventing the 3PM Slump."

Sure, if you eat it, you could get a blood sugar rise, but as nutritionists and doctors tell us, this spurt will probably be swiftly followed by another slump.

But let's get back to Paltrow. Sure, she was a little heated in her reaction, but she made sense. I completely agree with her sentiments.

Perhaps one could call Paltrow a little fanatical about her desire for quality foods. Big deal. (Hey, others might use the same word to describe me, too.)

But these silly scribblings from the columnists make them sound like they're even more fanatical in their defense of junk food such as Cup-a-Soup! (It sounds like she hit a sore spot with them.)

"Nutritionist to the Stars" Offers Help to Actress

Very cool! Just got off the phone with Oz Garcia, who's known as the "Nutritionist to the Stars."

Oz has offered -- at my suggestion -- to give maple syrup-loving actress Rachel McAdams (who stars in "Red Eye") one complimentary nutrition consultation and a copy of Look and Fabulous Forever.

Oz Garcia: Look and Feel Fabulous Forever

These offers are fabulous!

Oz is a very hot nutritionist, whose list of star clients includes Oscar winner Hilary Swank, actress Kim Cattrall, model Veronica Webb, and singer Roberta Flack.

I do hope McAdams takes Oz up on this geat offer.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, yesterday, I lamented Rachel McAdams' misleading comments to AOL, in which she revealed that "drinking maple syrup" was one of the secrets to her slim figure, and I urged you NOT to follow her dismal, disastrous "dietary advice."

Horrified by her comments, I then consulted a number of experts -- physicians, nutritionists, etc., who also warned of the dire consequences of her maple-syrup, blood-sugar bouncing beverage breaks.

In fact, I just received two more e-mail responses from shocked physicians.

Deborah A. Metzger, PhD, MD, head of Harmony Women's Health in Los Altos, California, and co-author of Stay Fertile Longer.

Dr. Metzger cautions: "My fear is that this story will provide a reason for misdirected obese teenagers to begin drinking maple syrup to lose weight."  She continues: "It is incumbent upon the press to take responsibility for their role in disseminating this type of misinformation."

Mark Hyman, M.D., co-author of Ultra Prevention, former co-medical director at Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires, who's now editor in chief of the peer-reviewed Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, notes that "Maple syrup can help you lose weight -- if you eat nothing else and don't have too much! Otherwise, I agree that the whole idea is a little ridiculous."

BIG BOOS for "Red Eye" Star, Who Lauds Sugar as Diet Secret!

Do NOT -- I repeat -- do NOT -- listen to Red Eye star Rachel McAdams, 29, who clearly is so lacking in nutrition knowledge that it simply boggles the mind!

The actress, asked by AOL how she stays slim, had the idiocy to say that her love for sugar helps keep her thin!!

This is not "diet advice" -- this is dispensing disastrous dietary NONSENSE!!

"I drink maple syrup," she admits. "Then I'm hyper so I just run around like crazy and work it all off."

This has to be the MOST dumb, preposterous comment I've ever heard a celebrity make -- and I've interviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of them in my previous life as an entertainment journalist.

Therefore, I am hereby announcing, in this blog item, that I'm bestowing the actress with my newly created "SUGAR SHOCK! Biggest Boos & Jeers" honor.

The actress -- who actually does a convincing job in her starring role opposite Cillian Murphy in the riveting, suspenseful film from talented director Wes Craven ("Nightmare on Elm Street") -- desperately needs nutrition education.

Even though I heartily recommend the film Red Eye (see the movie's website, trailer and write your review here), I adamantly reject McAdams' sugar-guzzling "advice." (I formed this opinion based upon my extensive research for the last four years into the dangers of sugars and refined carbs for my upcoming book SUGAR SHOCK!)

Worse case scenario, the actress is setting herself up for a major blood sugar reaction from all that maple syrup. (Doesn't matter that it's originally from a tree.) Not only could she faint on the set of her next movie, but she is paving the way for diseases galore.

More to the point, McAdams is inviting hypoglycemia, insulin resistance or diabetes to come get her, and then that will be a vivid horror scenario that nowhere near compares to the celluloid one from Wes Craven in which she stars!

I, for one, will volunteer:

  1. To give McAdams a free copy of SUGAR SHOCK!, when it is published. It will open her eyes to the dangers of downing maple syrup as if it were water.
  2. To provide free personal coaching to the actress to help her lick her soon-to-be-health-destroying sugar habit.

Nutrition-savvy folks out there, will you join me?

Will any of you 250-plus experts -- physicians, researchers and scientists who I interviewed for my book -- also give the actress copies of their books, etc. so that she can get an education and do away with her maple syrup-downing ways?

In fact, I called a particular nutritionist known for working with celebs to help McAdams come up with better food choices, but, alas, this person is on vacation. (I plan to get in touch though, with McAdams through her publicist.)

Gynweth Paltrow Snubs Nose at Cup-a-Soup

The columnist writes that when a production staffer admitted that his kids love the processed, additives-filled soup, Paltrow -- who follows a macrobiotic diet -- reportedly retorted, "I would rather die than let my kid eat Cup-a-Soup."

What we don't hear is the source of this information. So we're talking silly hearsay.

But let's say the account was true. Well, maybe the Academy Award-winning actress wasn't quite empathetic enough to the junk-food-reliant folks around her, but to say the acress gets "irrationally dramatic around convenience foods," as Slashfood put it, is simply overstating it. How absurd!

Can you blame Paltroow for her "eeww, not-for-my-child" reaction?

Luther Vandross' Death: Were His Carb Habit & Diabetes to Blame?

Did America's beloved soul singer Luther Vandross ulimately pass away at the young age of 54 on Friday because he didn't properly control his diabetes? Or was it the fact that his weight bounced up and down like a see-saw? And did his uncontrollable carb habit play a role?

Kudos to Fox News, Breaking News, and Diabetes Mine for pointing to the diabetes and weight-gain connections. Eonline.com came even closer to uncovering the truth, noting that the Grammy Award winner "said his father, brother, nephew, maternal grandfather and paternal grandfather had all succumbed to diabetes."

But, I can't help but wonder if Vandross' poor eating habits, combined with his family history of diabetes, weren't to blame for his early passing.

"If his career held steady, Vandross' health did not," Eonline.com reported. "By his own admission, he was a carb addict who lost, and gained, more than 100 pounds 14 times--often in the very public eye. As recently as 1998, the six-foot-three singer weighed in at 340 pounds."
