Just One Meal High in Both Sugar and Fat Can Harm You, Study Reveals: Jimmy Moore, You Misread This Blog

People who follow this SUGAR SHOCK! Blog and who have read my book SUGAR SHOCK! know that I devote considerable energies via this blog, TV, radio, articles, etc. to warning people about the dangers of sugary foods and refined carbohydrates, which I call "culprit carbs."

Folks familiar with my work also know that I'm a huge fan of:

  • What I call "Quality carbs" -- organic leafy green vegetables such as kale, collard greens, swiss chard and arugula; crudiferous veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage; root vegetables such as yams, sweet potatoes and turnips, and other low-sugar veggies; legumes such as chick peas, lentils and pinto beans; and low-sugar fruits in limited quantities such as strawberries, cherries and grapefruit. I also suggest that, if they like, people partake sparingly of such whole grains as brown rice and amaranth. (I urge people to be cautious about gluten products.)

As people who've read my book and blog know, I also advocate:

  • Quality fats such as superior olive oil, macadamia nuts, avocado, coconut oil, pumpkin seeds, almonds, etc. -- again, all preferably organic.
  • Lean protein sources such as superior fish, chicken, turkey, again, preferably organic.
  • High quality water.

Furthermore, most of my fans know that I have a background as a journalist and that I try my best to report facts accurately and to ensure that people working for me do so as well.

So I'm utterly astounded and dismayed by a completely misinformed reaction and misleading blog entry from my blogging buddy Jimmy Moore. His surprising remarks were in response to a recent post on this blog, entitled "Just One High-Sugar, High-Fat Meal Can Damage Your Body, Study Stays."

This recent blog entry on the SUGAR SHOCK! Blog -- which was written by my hard-working researcher/blog correspondent Jennifer Moore (no relation to Jimmy) and edited by me -- discusses this fascinating new study, which found that just one meal high in both sugar and fat could harm your body in a number of ways.

The study -- from lead author James O'Keefe, M.D., head of preventive cardiology at the Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Mo. -- singles out the combination of sugar and fat as the culprit. Not sugar alone. Not fat alone. But the two together.

In particular, the research paper -- which appeared in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology -- cites as problematic our "highly processed, calorie-dense, nutrient-depleted diet favored in the current American culture" -- something I often bemoan as well. (Not having had time to read the entire study, I assume that the kind of fats being discussed in this study are inferior fats such as trans fats.)

Anyhow, my research assistant Jennifer was tipped off to this study by an intriguing Time article from Laura Blue.

In this article, the reporter wrote:

"Just one high-fat, high-sugar meal can trigger a biochemical cascade, causing inflammation of blood vessels and immediate, detrimental changes to the nervous system, according to the paper, published this week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. And just one healthy meal helps return your body to its optimal state."

The journalist then quotes the researcher Dr. O'Keefe stating: "Your health and vigor, at a very basic level, are as good as your last meal."

For some reason (which still escapes me), Jimmy -- whom I've supported quite a bit (despite our strong disagreement over artificial sweeteners and other areas) and whom I've interviewed three times on my Stop SUGAR SHOCK! Radio Show -- reacted completely inappropriately to Jennifer's blog entry.

I was astounded by his completely erroneous and misleading entry on his Livin' La Vida Low Carb Blog, which bears the shocking headline, "No, Connie Bennett, One High-Fat Meal Will NOT Damage Your Body."

Huh?

Neither Jennifer nor I said that. Not once did we single out one high-fat meal as culpable. We said sugar and fat cause problems, not fat alone.

Besides, this original blog entry from Jennifer was merely informing readers of this SUGAR SHOCK! Blog about a fascinating new study. We just told you about the research -- we didn't make it up. 

What gives, Jimmy? Didn't you carefully read this post, "Just One High-Sugar, High-Fat Meal Can Damage Your Body, Study Stays"?

Anyhow, I couldn't reply earlier to Jimmy's horribly misleading post and headline, because this is an extremely busy week for me. So let me close with this message directed to Jimmy and his fans. Jimmy, I imagine that you're overwhelmed with many things to do. And since we're all human, I forgive you, Jimmy, for your unfair and inaccurate assumptions and remarks about what both my researcher and I wrote.

In fact, I'll continue to support you, Jimmy, even if we don't see eye to eye on certain things. But I urge you, Jimmy, before you unfairly berate and blast either my researcher or me publicly, why not first carefully read what it is you're condemning so adamantly?

And while we're at it, I think I'll invite both you, Jimmy, and Dr. O'Keefe to appear on an upcoming Stop SUGAR SHOCK! Radio Show to talk about this intriguing new research.

Now that should be provocative, to say the least, especially since you, Jimmy, are such a pro-Atkins fan and Dr. O'Keefe is pro-vegetarian. Stay tuned, folks. Let's hope they both say yes.

Connie, I certainly wait with "baited breath" for the call with Dr. O'Keefe and Jimmy Moore. I'm not a fan of those who argue that Atkins is for everyone and listening to the two of them discuss (or argue) will be very interesting. When will your follow-up book be out and have you chosen a name?
