Prostate Cancer News: Low-Carb Diet May Slow Tumor Growth

Note from Connie: I never cease to be amazed at the ever-increasing amounts of research, which point to the benefits of cutting out or cutting back on those culprit carbs.

You'll now learn about a new study from researchers at the Duke Prostate Center, who found that a low-carb diet reduced the growth of prostate tumors in mice, as the Duke press release observed. Jennifer brings you the details.

A new study could provide hopeful news for the two million American men currently living with prostate cancer.

Duke University researchers found that mice put on the low-carb diet had the smallest tumors and lived longer than the those who ate a diet a high in carbohydrates.

"If this is ultimately confirmed in human clinical trials, it has huge implications for prostate cancer therapy through something that all of us can control, our diets," said Stephen Freedland, M.D., a Duke Medical Center urologist and lead author of the study, which was published in the journal Prostate.

Thanks to Medical News Today for the tip on this potentially life-saving research -- currently, 27,000 men die of prostate cancer annually. And let's hope those human clinical trials get under way soon!

I’m wondering what other people think. I’ve been doing some research on healthy eating and low carb diets in particular and came up with this one site called OpposingViews.com where there are debates by experts on various subjects. There is one debate called: “Are Low Carb Diets Healthy?”. I like the idea that these people are experts in their fields, but this one guy says something that gives me pause. He says something to the effect that eating whole plant foods is associated with having good health but diets high in animal protein and fats are not. He also says that in a global sense, a sustained low carbohydrate diet which comes mainly from animal foods creates significant challenges for the planet and also other health issues for people such as antibiotic resistance.” What do you think he means when he says that a diet which comes primarily from animal proteins is bad for the planet?
