South L.A. May Put a Halt to New Fast-Food Outlets

Note from Connie: I'll be darned. South Los Angeles may put a two-year moratorium to stop the proliferation of fast-food joints in South L.A. Karen James gives you a quick update.

 Los Angeles may enact what national food and health experts believe would be the first health-zoning law in the country if the city council votes to put a two-year moratorium on new fast-food outlets in South Los Angeles.

As you can learn about from the Christian Science Monitor and the Los Angeles Times, City Councilwoman Jan Perry introduced the measure out of concern about the disproportionately high numbers of obesity-related diseases in that part of the city.

Although the Christian Science Monitor noted that the vote was to have been held on September 18, as of yet we haven’t found any record of the outcome and so assume it has been postponed. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.
